Located in the neighborhood of Realengo, the place now known as Jardim Batan is approximately 50 years old, having grown substantially since the 1970s. The name derives from the Urubatã tree, which was there at the beginning of the land occupation. This was the first UPP installed in a region previously controlled by militiamen. The area covered by UPP Batan includes the communities Jardim Batan, Morrinho, Vila Jurema and Cristalina. UPP Batan was the third to be installed, on February 18, 2009 . Fumacê was included in the UPP Batan perimeter in August 2012. On September 30, 2011, the UPP Social Forum was held.
